CMU walls with veneer

CMU walls with veneer

Does anyone have a wall section or detail of a 8" cmu wall with 4" split face veneer wainscot. I have a client who is worried about water intrusion.

RE: CMU walls with veneer

Maybe you can explain your term 'wainscot' further. Usually that refers to something part height on the inside of the wall.

Is there a cavity between the masonry wythes?

RE: CMU walls with veneer

Yes...show us a detail. I am assuming a partial cavity wall up to a certain height for architectureal effect.

RE: CMU walls with veneer

TEK manuals have almost everything, but don't seem to address this. maybe you can modify the window sill detail in here?

Yes wainscot = not full height.
This is the what I would like to do with splitface veneer, not stone.

Everyone is doing it, CVS, Walmart, Walgreens. The top of the veneer has a water table banding stone.
I don't see any weep holes, appears to be anchored and solid.
I would think with a bituminous coating on the 8" cmu wall between the veneer there would be no water penetration.

RE: CMU walls with veneer

Could you switch to 12" split face block for the wainscot?

RE: CMU walls with veneer

The bituminous coating will prevent water intrusion but there should also be insulation with vapor barrier on the indoor side to prevent vapor condensation on cold surface.

RE: CMU walls with veneer

For the stores that you mentioned, it may not be hand layed brick. A lot of the big box stores used tilt up precast panels with just about any design or pattern cast into them. The brick look could be achieved by setting a brick mold in the form or by simply placing thin brick "tiles" such that they look like full depth brick in the finished product. That's why you don't see any weep holes and the brick work appears to be one solid piece.

Here in florida its all hand laid on those buildings. Entire walmarts are completely splitface. Problem with using 12" block is that splitface hollow core will wick. I will use the bituminous coating but the insulation is corefill-500 so exterior insulation is not required.

RE: CMU walls with veneer

You will still need flashing and weeps even with a 12" block backup. You still could have condensation build up in the cores. With thin tiles adhered to the face of block backup, you still would need flashing and weeps.

Not sure how they deal with water without weeps and flashing but none of the CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Beals buildings around here have them. So if you had a 12 inch split face block as a bottom wainscot, how would you deal with weep holes? You would have to slot the blocks.

RE: CMU walls with veneer

We would typically have a 4" solid block (outside) and an 8" filled block (inside) at the bottom. The flashing would run over the top of the 8" block and down the inside face of the 4" to the bottom and turn again along the foundation wall to the outside face to direct water out.

Weeps can be made in different ways. Leaving out vertical joints (actually there are little vents that should be use in these joints). Small holes can be drilled or formed in the lowest horizontal mortar joint also.
