Fire Pump House

Fire Pump House

Fire Pump House

(OP)
We are going to design and install a fire pump house on a large poultry plant. The underground supply loops around the plant and ties into the city water with a backflow preventer.

I would like if possible to tie into that system and basically boost the whole facility which is supplied by multiple risers.

Is it possible to have my suction line tied into that loop and then discharge back into the loop?

Thanks,

RE: Fire Pump House

Yes the fire pump would be a " booster pump" taking the city supply and boosting the pressure. A few things to keep in mind.

1. The pump discharge psi should not exceed 175psi.
2. The city supply to the pump should be able to supply 150% rating of the pump and not let the city supply go below 20 psi.
3. How reliable is the electric supply, may need a Diesel engine for the pump.
4 I assume this is a dedicated fire service supply only. This will not work if it is also supplying production water.

See NFPA 20 for more details.

RE: Fire Pump House

I don't think what you want is feasible. It sounds like you want to dump your discharge into your suction piping. That would not be permitted. You need to take the suction supply from the city line that is checked against the loop. Then discharge can go into the loop, so you pump the entire loop.
