Moment diagram for frames

Moment diagram for frames

Will be taking the PE exam soon and was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a pretty comprehensive list of moment diagrams for frames? Would like to quickly be able to determine max moments on the frame, reaction values and deflections assuming "I" is known.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

One good source is the classic textbook "Rigid Frame Formulas" by Kleinlogel. I suspect you can find a good (or better) condition used copy on Amazon. If you go this route you will want to spend a little time familiarizing yourself with the book as its nomenclature may not agree with your daily practice (moment of inertia = J, for example).

RE: Moment diagram for frames

Yea! Check out the prices for "Rigid Frame Formulas" by Kleinlogel... $165 to $460. I'd love to have one, but not at that price!

RE: Moment diagram for frames

You won't need something like that for the PE but that's the reference to have.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

I have found some documents online that are very similar to Kleinlogel formulas. Do a search.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

The most "rigid" frame you'll see on the structural PE is a statically determinate cantilever

The SR is a different story but most likely the most complex thing will be a 3-hinge arch or using the portal method.

PE is a joke if you do structures on a day to day basis and do minimal studying.

SE is difficult, but very doable, just gotta study up nuances of the code and make sure you still do hand calcs in practice.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

The copyright of the Kleinlogel English version may still be in effect. Anyway a PDF of the German version is available at google books; really no different from the English version. If the link doesn't work, go to their page and type in "Rahmenformeln". Good luck on the test.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

I wonder how many of us have the Kleinlogel sheets that clarke1973 attached in a binder somewhere? I know I do. I think I got mine in 1976.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

I bought my Kleinlogel new in 1970 for US$14.50 The price printed on the back of the dust cover said $7.50
I'm putting this in my will.

Thanks for the response guys. Since i originally posted the thread I discovered that one of the older engineers i work with has a book called "Frames and Arches" written by Valerian Leontovich and published by Mcgraw-Hill copy right 1959. It has a Engineering Societies Monographs seal thing on the front cover. It has moment diagrams for more frames and arches than I would ever want.

RE: Moment diagram for frames

I'm blaming you guys when my wife's Kindle starts showing all these in her "recommended reading" list.

Seriously though, thanks for all the references.
