Stiffener ring requirement check

(OP)
Hi,

How to check whether a vessel need stiffener ring or not? Is there any code in ASME to check this? Is this simply depends on the designer? UG 29 and 30 only describes the design of ring.

RE: Stiffener ring requirement check

My guess would be that economy of construction would dictate when stiffener rings should be used.

RE: Stiffener ring requirement check

The thickness design for external pressure for a cylindrical shell is based on a length L. If the shell is not stuff enough for the external pressure, you either make the shell thicker or you reduce L by introducing stiffeners.
