Hello,

I am currently attempting stress linearization on a model of a cylinder with internal pressure applied.

The model is axis symmetric and only a 1/4 of the model is modeled and the symmetric fixture is used within Simulation.

My section plot cuts the model in half again (effectively to an 1/8 of the full cylinder). My question is how on earth do I ensure that my SCL is perpendicular to the inner and outer shell wall?

When I select the two points they are never straight, I have tried adding split lines and reference points and all have not been successful so far.

Take a horizontal cut at the model at interested location to ensure the SCL is perpendicular to vertical vessel wall and same way but at at angles for dishends.

Hello NRP99,

I think you may have mistaken my question, I do understand the theory of horizontally cutting the vessell wall as per Annex 5A.
My question comes in actually carrying this out whilst using the Solidworks Simulation software.
I have created a section plot and proceeded to Linearize.
SolidWorks asks for you to select two places on the section plot to linearize the stresses between.
However I am asking how do you ensure that these points are both horizontal (have the exact same value in the Y-Axis.
I have tried creating a split line but even then I am unable to select the two points at the wall.

Two quick thoughts:

1. SOLIDWORKS Simulation takes the points from wherever you click. If you set the view perpendicular and zoom in, you should be able to get the view such that you can eyeball a pretty perpendicular line.
2. If you vary +/- a couple degrees from perpendicular, there are few scenarios where you are going to get wildly different values. You could verify this by trying a few different clicks and comparing the change in calculated values.

I guess you are finding difficult to have two points perpendicular to cylinder wall surfaces. I am not using SOLIDWORKS. But in ANSYS I can define two points for stress linearization with X,Y and Z coordinate as well as directly picking nodes or points on model. You need to have similar facility to have perfect perpendicular line to wall. Try asking this query to customer support team of SOLIDWORKS or refer help manual.
