Shearing behavior

Shearing behavior

(OP)
Hello
just wanted to clarify my thoughts on something about volumetric response of soils in shear , when does contractive or dilative behavior happens ? i believe its when σ'v+Δσz > or < than the effective average stress σ'm=σ1+2σ3/3

RE: Shearing behavior

It depends what side of the critical state line it is (i.e. you need to consider void ratio not just effective stress).

RE: Shearing behavior

yes, it's related to critical state soil mechanics and the critical void ratio.

Thank you both but can you confirm the condition i stated back there

RE: Shearing behavior

I cannot, 'cause I don't think they're related.
