flange thickness calculation

flange thickness calculation

flange thickness calculation

(OP)

hello,

this is a follow up of the thread below:
thread507-348790: Flange Strength Calculation

My doubt came after seeing some papers, for eg. this one: http://mycommittees.api.org/standards/ecs/sc17/Ite...

In the flange thickness calculation, the section modulus S=w*t2, where w=pi*(dflange-dbolt). My doubt is that why is the circumference considered as width than the value w=Rout - Rin.

My thought was that, if I cut the circular flange, then the section in bending will be only a rectangular section. Then why is the whole circumference taken into account. I know this is pretty basic , but I just cannot convince myself whats right.
