Consumable Impact test requirement

Consumable Impact test requirement

Consumable Impact test requirement

(OP)
Dear Sir,

1) Is it required carry impact test (prior to production )for the consumables while we are using WPS with impact tested ? If it is yes, what temperature we need to conduct and who is responsible to carry out?

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

There is no requirement in ASME codes to perform field or shop impact test of welding consumables prior to performing production welds. However if the design code calls for impact test then it's always advisable to purchase welding consumables with impact test(which is to be performed by consumable manufacturers). Impact test temperature for the welding consumables should equal or be lower than the PQR impact testing temperature.

ASME codes has a provision of production weld coupons, which is far stringent in European Codes. Failures of any production coupons could hold up all the remaining production welds and production schedule. Should such requirements in design contract, then it's strongly advisable to procure impact tested welding consumables.

Also if the impact test temperature is too low, say -50 Deg or -75/-100 Deg for C.S and few grades of low alloy steels(say 2.5% or 3.5% Nickel Steel), then its advisable to have consumables impact tested in the highest heat input condition, 3G upwards as additional safety.

Thanks.

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

There are at least a couple clauses in ASME VIII Div 1 that require impact testing of consumables in specific instances. But it depends on the materials, temperatures, and welding processes. There is not a generic requirement for all consumables.

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

Off the top of my head, UHA-51(f) of ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 requires impact testing of filler metal under certain conditions.

Dear Sir,

We are not used any impact tested consumables while qualifying PQR (SMAW/GTAW/SAW/GMAW),however coupon is qualified with impact test for the temp -25 deg C and prepared WPS(for impact test) and this WPS is used for the temperature -15 deg C(MDMT) while production so is it consumables used in production required to be impact tested( ie manufacture certificate with impact test for -15 deg C).

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

Hi Mandmm,

What're the types of materials you're dealing with C.S,LAS?? What're the AWS specifications of applicable welding consumables?? Could you be specific?
Appreciate your response.

Thanks.

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

Hi Mandmm,
Yes, you need to qualify the Welding consumables as per ASME sec-II part C.

Regards

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

The AWS specification and class requirements apply to the filler metal manufacturer - not the purchaser.

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

Material Details as below,

Plate: ASTM A 516 GR 60 (Impact tested)
Consumables: (Not impact tested)
SMAW Electrode 7018 4 HR
SAW Flux: SFA 5.17- EH 12 K

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

if you used a WPS with impact test required, that means the production weld beam will bear low-temp toughness test, so the consumable must meet the low-temp toughness test.

therefore, when you select the consumable, you must select the consumable with the impact test which had been done by the consumable manufacture.
BUT related to the impact test preformed by the fabricator depending on the fabricator's quality control system, the ASME CODE don't provision this issue. IF the quality control system describes the material which used in fabrication of production must re-test by the fabricator itself. then impact test and other tests must be done prior to production.

RE: Consumable Impact test requirement

There is nothing in the ASME Code that states you must to choose consumables with impact testing by the consumable manufacturer. There are exemptions laid out in UCS-67 if you do, but nothing mandates impact tested consumables. Use the consumable used in the qualification of the WPS.
