Place a wave tank on 10th Floor

Place a wave tank on 10th Floor

Place a wave tank on 10th Floor

(OP)
We are thinking of installing a wave tank on 10th Floor of an industrial building, its floor live load limit is 750kPa, spec of the tank is:
dimension: length 7m, width 1.2m, depth 1.2m
static load of the tank: empty tank 1000kg, filled with water (at 0.6m depth) is 5040kg
live load of the tank: when generating wave, there are extra dynamic load 500kg

The concern is: the floor live load 750kPA is not likely to sustain the loads, what if we build a steel floor pad to spread its load at larger area? let say length 10m, width 4m, will this become safe?

RE: Place a wave tank on 10th Floor

Running the unit conversion shows that 750 kPA is much higher than a normal floor live load, check the number and the units again.

That being said, this is the kind of a question where you probably need to retain a local engineer to evaluate the floor and/or other structural aspects of the building.

On the steel plate idea, getting a plate stiff enough to spread the load as desired, you will also be adding a lot of extra weight in the plate itself.

RE: Place a wave tank on 10th Floor

750 kPa is 75 metres of water. If your structure can take that, it should be able to take anything.

RE: Place a wave tank on 10th Floor

There's a possibility that your live load could be 7.5kPa and you've put the decimal in the wrong place. That's still on the large side for a generic industrial building with ten stories...

On that note, a ten story industrial building isn't exactly normal. Out of curiosity, what was the building for originally?

Tuned mass damper?
