Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

(OP)
Hi,

I need to create rough surfaces in ABAQUS. The existing model is circular beams having perfect geometry, how can I incorporate disturbance/roughness to the existing surface? I have already tried *Imperfection approach but that's not giving me enough roughness.

RE: Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

Is this for a contact problem? What are you trying to model?

RE: Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

I was wondering more why you want to incorporate surface roughness? and what you mean by "enough surface roughness"? Enough for what?

Sorry, just trying to understand your problem

The real surface is rough/uneven, so it is important to replicate the surface unevenness in simulation.

If I use the *Imperfect approach, I get unevenness as in large wavy shape, whereas I need the disturbance to be small wave like, discrete.

Like Dave, I am not sure what you want to accomplish. What is the purpose of the model? What is the end result? What experimental data do you have or plan on having to validate your model results against?

High strain rate test data will be validated against the model, surface unevenness may play an important role on overall response.

RE: Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

"The real surface is rough/uneven, so it is important to replicate the surface unevenness in simulation."

Why is it important? How does surface finish affect the response? How is your model behaving unexpectedly without rough surfaces? Is it for contact? If so you can adjust the tangential interaction properties to replicate rough surface interaction without explicitly modelling the rough surface finish.

Is there a method to correlate rough surface properties (i.e. Ra or Rz) to tangential interaction properties??

RE: Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

The relationship between friction and surface roughness is typically nonlinear and variable. Furthermore, it is also dependent upon the materials involved, how they were processed, the type of motion involved and probably also on the environmental factors such as lubrication, temperature etc.

I don't think you can make a reliable correlation without testing, but you should check the literature.

Any pointers on making the geometry imperfect?

RE: Creating rough surfaces in ABAQUS

No. I don't know why you would do that.
