Flange Gasket joint modelling using FEA

Flange Gasket joint modelling using FEA

Flange Gasket joint modelling using FEA

(OP)
I need general inputs regarding flange gasket joint modelling using FEA with respect to following points. I use ANSYS Workbench. But in general input regardless of software used would be also helpful.

1. How to model behavior of flange to gasket contact?
2. Which type of behavior will be close to actual- bonded/frictional/no separation?
I have refereed literature and most are adopting frictional. But as you know the time required for analysis to coverage with frictional contact is generally more.
3. What would be the parameters which are main tricks to such convergence issue?
4. If suppose I don't have gasket properties, is it OK/conservative to assume material properties of gasket same as flange? I know this is not the appropriate way to model gasket. But in some cases where obtaining properties is time consuming what would be the correct way to simulate gasket and its properties?
5. If bolts are not modeled and bolt load is applied on the bolt holes, does it make difference to the actual bolt modelling? Surely we will get max stress on the bolt holes, but what is difference between these approaches modelling wise/stress wise?
6. Approach required for Tubesheet flange joint VS Pipe/vessel flange joint.
7. Any good references/articles/guidelines regarding the FEA modelling/analysis of flange joints. I know there are lot of resources available online. But skimming through some got very limited information. Please refer some good resources.
8. For global problems(for example to check a small U-tube exchanger unit in marine application for gravity loads) is it necessary to include every detail as it is done for local analysis of flange joints? What is appropriate way to simulate?

Appreciate any help in advance. Thank you

RE: Flange Gasket joint modelling using FEA

There are many ASME PVP Conference papers on this topic. Start your research there.

Thank you TGS4.

I will check the ASME PVP Conference papers. Could you suggest any other reference?
