Determination of Flange Rating A694 F52 Material

Determination of Flange Rating A694 F52 Material

Determination of Flange Rating A694 F52 Material

(OP)

Goodday,
please how do i determine the flange rating of a 30" Flange of material A694 F52 (ASME B16.47)
Given the design conditions Temp - 38degC Pressure = 1480PSIG.

Thanks for your assistance.

Regards,

RE: Determination of Flange Rating A694 F52 Material

EFEMONA, this material is apparently not listed in B16.47. This means you will have to determine the rating by some means per the Code of construction, such as Apx 2 of Sec VIII, Div 1 or whatever. Assuming it is a permitted material there.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: Determination of Flange Rating A694 F52 Material

What is your main design code for the system?

Often A694 Fxx is used to connect API 5L X line pipe in pipeline systems

If I was you I would use ANSI/MSS SP 44 as your flange code. This lists A694 as a material and provides pressure temperature rating for flanges, but you really should be supplying them to that specification.

To MSS SP 44, this is the rating of a class 600 flange.

Good morning,

Many thanks Littleinch and SnTman for your prompt reply.
Actually the design Code is ASME B31.4 Pipeline Transportation System for Liquid Hydrocarbon and other liquids.
Pipeline material (PIG LAUNCHER) is API 5L X52.

With the above explanation, i will refer to the Code MSS SP 44 for the determination of the Flange rating.
I really appreciate.

Also I will like to know, if it is a good design to connect a flange with a fitting (weldolet) directly to the pipeline i.e.the barrel (in this case i am designing a pig Launcher) considering the high pressure of about 1480PISG or to use nozzle? Noting that it is a pipeline code been used for the design of the Pig Launcher.

Regards,

Efemona

RE: Determination of Flange Rating A694 F52 Material

Yes you can weld a flange direct to a weldolet. - I assume you mean small branch or small tapping on your 30" pig trap?
Most time you don't want to do that within 2 pipe diameters of the main run and branch, i.e. don't use a 20" weldolet on a 24" header and use a reducing tee instead.

Its very common for people to get this wrong and ask for a ASME B 16.5 or 16.47 flange using A694 FXX material when they should be specifying or calling off a flange to ANSI/MSS SP 44 using A 694.....

A side benefit is that the de-rating of flanges in MSS SP 44 doesn't start until 121 C (250F)
