Overlapping Welds in accordance to ASME BPVC Section VIII Div. 1

Overlapping Welds in accordance to ASME BPVC Section VIII Div. 1

Overlapping Welds in accordance to ASME BPVC Section VIII Div. 1

(OP)
Hello everyone,

I am working on a calculation for a vessel with two saddle supports welded to it. When looking at the drawing as well as the physical vessel it appears that the saddle supports have been welded over the Category A head to shell weld, making these welds overlap. I needed some insight as to whether or not this is permissible. And if there is an article that pertains to it not being permissible by ASME BPVC Section VIII Div 1?

The joint efficiency for the welds of this vessel are that of 1.00 since the vessel is fully radiographed for lethal service.

I'd appreciate your insight/ experience on the subject.

Thank you,
Emily

1) I understand that head is hemispherical.
2) NOT PERMISSIBLE

r6155,

I didn't think it was permissible. Would you know where it states that this is not permissible? And the head is actually a flanged and dished head.

Thank you! :)

For lethal service all pressure weld shall be free to inspect and test during fabrication and in service inspection.
Where is the quality control of your pressure vessel?

The vessel has been recertified in the past and has undergone full radiography and according to the radiography reports all welds are acceptable.

That is why I wanted to know if there was an article that had this as a discrepancy in writing, that way I can make a note that the pressure vessel is not suitable for service. But if there isn't anything that states it is not permissible then according to the radiography reports it is permissible.

Thanks for the help.
