Number of Risers in multi-storey shopping mall
Number of Risers in multi-storey shopping mall
(OP)
Good day to all,
What is criteria to select number of risers in shopping mall(Ordinary Hazard Group2), we've a shopping mall who has two floors. The area of the shopping mall is 75,000 sq.ft. on each floor.According to NFPA 13 we can use 2 risers to cover this area on ground floor, does we need another two risers for first floor, or we can extend these two risers(for ground floor) to cover first floor also.
Is this case different from High rise building?
( For example If in high rise building we've area of 20,000 sq. ft. on each floor and we've 15 floors, then we can use single riser to feed the sprinklers on each floor)
Thanks.

RE: Number of Risers in multi-storey shopping mall
2nd example of high rise: Much different. You are going to have standpipes. You will need a floor control assembly for each floor. You can have a single standpipe run vertically and then do the floor control assembly on each floor.
FYI - I prefer the term control valve assembly (control valve, tamper switch, flow switch, check valve, gauge kit and test-n-drain) when referring to systems. The term riser seems to have many different meanings across different disciplines.

You can feed them however you want as long as limit the area of coverage to less than 52k sq ft per floor since you have a 2 story - strictly per NFPA. Building code may differ in mall application. Do your homework to reference the appropriate code/standard.
Personally, I wouldn't just have two control assemblies. Malls change tenants way too often. You want to be able to fix that a lot easier.

If you don't have a copy of the NFPA standards, they can be accessed for free in a read-only format on NFPA's website.
