Researching Square Tube Cutout Stress Analysis
Researching Square Tube Cutout Stress Analysis
(OP)
Hi,
I'm working on a design project to reduce the weight of a suspension. I'm trying to do research on the optimum cut out shapes/sizes on square tubes. I haven't been able to find anything useful and I'm guessing it might be because i'm not using the right terminology.
I have a square tube like this:

And I want to see stress analysis results of making cut outs using simple shapes (circle, triangle, etc) like these:

Any help in terms of what to search for would be appreciated.
I'm in the process of modelling this on solid works but I'm having issues with that so I thought I'd do some research in the mean time. (https://s31.postimg.org/cpk40ispn/Capture.jpg)
Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking to see if any research has already been done regarding cut outs on square beams. For example, I found one on cut outs of composite plates (http://www.escm.eu.org/docs/eccm13/posters/2114.pd...).
I will do stress analysis calculations for my application but for the sake of time if I could find out what types of shapes are ideal in regards to stress concentration then that would help guide the design.

If your goal is to avoid concentrated stresses, you need the largest possible corner radii. That means round holes. If your goal is maximum mass removal, you need square or triangular cutouts, with the choice between the two dependent on the loading.

I can send the file. I believe Risa is also compatable with Staad.
