Welding galv. ASTM A53 gr. B handrail?

Welding galv. ASTM A53 gr. B handrail?

(OP)
A project specifies galvanized ASTM A53 grade B pipe for handrail. Must this handrail be welded with GMAW (mig) or can SMAW (stick) be used?

RE: Welding galv. ASTM A53 gr. B handrail?

If they didn't spec what welding to use, I wouldn't worry too much about it, as it's not pressure pipe or a structural component. I would try to get away with a bevel weld and no root. What is hand rail designed to? point load and maybe an allowance for impact?

I would use mig or tig either way, since you'll be touching up any splatter, the welder will thank you too, since galv is already so crappy to work with.

Are you bidding work or executing?

RE: Welding galv. ASTM A53 gr. B handrail?

I'd use a stick with a rod capable of gouging some.

I hope the project also specs how to touch up the galv coating, and the directions to the nearest hospital.
This is not how handrails are to be fabbed.

Bridgebuster

No, management frowns on double posting. Cross-posting, i.e. putting a thread in the other forum referencing this one (or vice versa) is actually encouraged.
