My building department has informed me that I have to have piers or piles, down 10' or so, gain a geotechnical and soils report, for the geotechnical engineer to recommend a reduced set back from the long steep slope, to complete an extension (or actually permit an extension) to a house in the Santa Monica Mountains, and of course usual seismic considerations for southern California and this area. The rock is granitious bedrock, a decomposing granite. Where could I recruit an engineer who could design the piles/piers and grade beam?

RE: piers piles grade beam

You'll need two engineers....a geotech and a structural. Try the yellow pages in the area.

Ah yes the yellow pages. Think I ve identified a geo tech. Rather than 'let my fingers do the walking' I was hoping someone might now where structural engineers go to look at project jobs, 'part time' work, job boards etc? - you know the modern way

RE: piers piles grade beam

Unfortunately, engineer's in general (structurals for sure) are busy enough they don't need to go looking for little jobs like these. Rather they need to hunt down the big jobs, the little jobs generally find them.
