Im looking for a free version of this document: Roof Curb Design: For Compliance with Building Code Seismic and Wind Load Requirements by PJ Selman. Anyone know where I can find a copy? Thanks

RE: ASCE document

ASCE holds a copyright on this publication. You have to purchase it through their cooperative library system.

You might contact thybar.com as they might have promotional copies of the publication (Selman is/was their engineer.)

I'm hesitant to spend money on it because I'm not sure if it will actually help me. Furthermore, Im quite sure it is way overpriced for its content. I need to preview this document before I go ahead and spend $80 to buy it.

RE: ASCE document

ASCE has always been the worst for cost per value in some of their publications (in my limited opinion at least). I remember once we had to spend almost $100 just to get one equation in sub 20 page document. I can totally understand your desire to preview it to see if the value is proportional to the cost.

In a google search this was the only thing I turned up that may be relevant: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjatsqBhs7NAhUKdT4KHbxHABoQFggiMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsweets.construction.com%2Fswts_content_files%2F653%2F706240.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEB0GCBAqMfMu0-e1JSxG_8Ny9ugQ&sig2=hontLkYbEq2fVbTjFhDPrA

No idea if it's the same or similar material to the ASCE text but it can't hurt.

Sometimes its cost efficient to get a "library card"......that is, if you know you are going to have to buy multiple documents.

I was researching something in their journals once and I bought that. I don't think it applies to codes/standards however.

RE: ASCE document

Maybe this article has enough information for you to determine if the document is necessary/adequate.

Considering Curbs

RE: ASCE document

the latest copy of Selman I have references IBC 2009, which, I think/presume-without-checking, references ASCE 7-05 (certainly not ASCE 7-10). The article I have basically emphasizes the utilization of statics to determine connection loads (sliding force and OTM hold downs), but references the current code to determines what the applicable wind and seismic forces may be.

guessing that your project is in California from other posts, it is my understanding that California references ASCE 7-10 which has added a significant wind load requirements beyond 7-05. You might be surprised at how often wind load trumps seismic in California. ASCE 7-10 provides a reasonably clear guide to development of forces.

RE: ASCE document

The resulting wind forces derived from 7-10 are basically the same as 7-05.
They changed the wind speeds to be an ultimate condition and included the importance factor in the maps but the basic surface coefficient tables are essentially the same - so the safety factor was just moved is all.

RE: ASCE document

@JAE
yea, the ASD to ultimate... yep, but for this specific condition, 7-10 added that uplift requirement, which was nebulously referenced in the 7-05 commentary.

RE: ASCE document

Triangled - got it - you were referring to the specific OP question about roof curbs and I was wandering off talking about general wind.
Appreciate the info on that added uplift.
