under bench glasswasher - hood requirement

under bench glasswasher - hood requirement

under bench glasswasher - hood requirement

(OP)
Hi, I've got an application where we are moving a couple of under bench glass washers within an existing building. They are approximately the same size as typical residential dishwashers and I was looking to treat them as such. Having reviewed the relevant code (IMC2012) I note that the code requires you to treat domestic style dishwashers as commercial type.

I feel it is ridiculous to provide a hood for an under bench dish/glass washer.

I see there appears to be a get-out-of-jail-free card in section 5.7.2.2 which basically says if the heat/moisture can be dealt with by the existing HVAC system you don't need a hood. Have other people used this clause?

Edit: note, there is no hood at the existing location

RE: under bench glasswasher - hood requirement

Talk to the operators/room occupants if they think local switched exhaust fan would be required to capture hot moist air coming out of open washer door. Depends on how often the washers are used. If required, locate rust proof exhaust grille over washer door.

RE: under bench glasswasher - hood requirement

I wouldn't bother with a hood unless the AHJ brings it up. The intent of hoods at dishwashers is mostly for commercial units which produce a significant amount of steam, conveyor dishwashers are really bad as they are open on both ends.

A small dish/glass wash isn't going to generate so much steam that the HVAC system can't handle it.
