Does a metallic control valve with welded ends in a piping system designed to meet ASME B31.3 have to meet ASME B16.34?

It is listed in appendix E of B 31.3, but whether it "has to meet" is rather doubtful.

I suppose it officially becomes an unlisted component, but if there are lots about and it is made to a recognized standard or code then it should be perfectly acceptable

The short answer is no.

Per ASME B31.3 307.1.1, valves that meet a listed standard (such as B16.34, but not limited to B16.34; as listed in Table 326.1) are acceptable provided they also meet the 307.2 requirements. Additionally, per 307.1.2, valves that do not meet a listed standard may be used in accordance with 302.2.3 (and presumably 307.2). See B31.3 Sections 307, 302.2.3, Table 326.1, and Appendix E.

Pennpiper, guilty as charged. I'm a structural engineer but I'm working in a multi-discipline company so I'm trying to branch out. As the oil and gas business contracts it's important that I understand a broader range of things. I'm not attempting to become a pipe stress engineer but I do want to understand some of the basics. The question came up today from our quality control person pretty much as I've phrased it. Our pipe stress engineer said that it does not, although it wouldn't be a bad idea. I have a lot of respect for our pipe stress guy but I'm just trying to get some other opinions. Both the quality engineer and myself may have read B31.3 a little too literally. When it refers to components listed in Table 326.1 we said, "Yep, valves are there so they must conform to B16.34." Now, I'm starting to think that it means a valve that conforms to B16.34 is listed in Table 326.1. If it wasn't designed per B16.34 than you have to meet the requirements of paragraph 304.7.2.

So that's the story. Please let me know what you're interpretation is. Thanks.
