Copy sketch with link to another part

Copy sketch with link to another part

Copy sketch with link to another part

(OP)
Hello,

i'm used to CATIA, but now i'm doing a few works in SW.

I'm trying to copy a sketch from one part to another, but i want the the copied sketch maintains a link to the geometry of the first one. In catia i can past the sketch with link. Then everything that i make to the first sketch will update to the copied one. How can i do it in SW.

Thanks

RE: Copy sketch with link to another part

SolidWorks removes all external constraints when pasting sketches. Sorry.

It's possible using convert entities?
I believe it is, but if I change the geometries of the first sketch, the one that has the geometries with the convert entities will not update, or am I wrong?

RE: Copy sketch with link to another part

You can convert entities in any part. But, when you copy that sketch to another part, the copied sketch will lose the reference (constraints) as TheTick wrote.

RE: Copy sketch with link to another part

What you can do is insert the part into the new part. You'll have the option of what it is you want to insert, simply make sure that you deselect 'solid bodies', but select 'absorbed sketches'. This will create an externally referenced sketch that will update with the parent sketch. You will need to have the parent open for any updates to occur.

RE: Copy sketch with link to another part

If the parts are in an assembly together you can reference the sketch in the original part through the assembly. If they line up you could use convert entities, otherwise it might be a lot of setting individual lines or arcs to be equal to each other.

RE: Copy sketch with link to another part

It would be helpful to those trying to help you if you provided more information.

If you want to use a sketch as part of a master model, then copy the master sketch parts in context to a component using Convert Entities, as was suggested.

RE: Copy sketch with link to another part

Have a look at "Derived sketch" in the help. It's helpful for top down design when you are working in the same assembly. If the parts are not related through an assembly then I would do what Jeff Mirisola described.

Patrick
