If a reducer will be installed at discharge of centrifugal pump is it best to install as close as possible to discharge nozzle? thanks in advance for the advice.

won't make any difference where it is installed, pick the most convenient location to suit the system.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

You often see it straight after the discharge flange as this reduces the velocity in any downstream elbow, especially when the discharge is vertical, but you want the pipe run to be horizontal.

Depends on why you want the reducer there and whether it is making the downstream pipe bigger or smaller. If smaller then costs will be reduced as soon as you make the pipe smaller.

im forced to rectify the poor selection of pump, the design should have a discharge of 6" N.D. but instead they got a discharge of 5"N.D.

At that difference just weld it fitting to fitting onto the 5" flange unless you really have no room then do it straight after the elbow.

Jay330. Most pumps you tend to see the reducers right on the discharge nozzles. But if you had a 0.5m or 1.0m length of pipe before the reducer that is not going to be an issue. In fact it may be considered good practice in some circles. Either way is acceptable.
