Bearing Length per NDS
Bearing Length per NDS
(OP)
The NDS makes a lot of mentions of "Bearing Length" for beam support conditions. However, nowhere is this "bearing length" thoroughly defined. Can anyone give a clear definition and reference for that definition please? Thanks /

RE: Bearing Length per NDS
Then NDS 3.10 tells you how to design for bearing (design factors, what lengths to take for bearing as the case when you have compression through bolts, etc.)
RE: Bearing Length per NDS
Regardless of how NDS is referring to bearing length, i believe it is our/your responsibility to define what the required bearing length is to be, based similarly to what sponton was referring to - you simply need to distribute your reaction(s) over the allowable compression perp or para to grain specific to the supporting wood species.
A clear definition of bearing (L)ength is (R)eaction divided by allowable (C)ompression divided by (W)idth of bearing member. (OR) L = R / C / W. Apply applicable adjustment factors.
The reference would be basic statics.
Again, where in NDS are you finding the "lots of mentions" to "bearing length"? Maybe i'm missing something.
