ASME Section VIII Div 1 Unstayed Flat Head

ASME Section VIII Div 1 Unstayed Flat Head

ASME Section VIII Div 1 Unstayed Flat Head

(OP)
Hello everybody,

I am currently working on a calculation for scrubber towers. the towers have bolted on unstayed flat heads. As I have been going through the minimum thickness requirements for the flat head I ran into some questions.

ASME Section VIII Div 1 UG-34 refers to mandatory appendix 2-5 in order to obtain W (flange design bolt load). In this equation you need to look at Table 2-5.2 (Effective Gasket width) in order to determine bo as a general note in the table it states that the gasket factors listed only apply to flanged joints in which the gasket is contained within the inner edges of the bolt holes.

However, the gasket used for the flat head contains bolt holes and therefore the bolts go through the gasket, does this make this table not applicable?

I tried looking at the ASME PTB-4 for guidance but the example they give the gasket falls within the inner edges of the bolt holes. I would like to know if there is a way I should be looking at this in order to obtain the correct numbers for W. If anyone has ever dealt with gaskets where the bolts for the flat head goes through both the head and gasket, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Emily

RE: ASME Section VIII Div 1 Unstayed Flat Head

Does your geometry look like Figure UG-34 sketch (p)? If so, then your thickness is calculated by UG-34(c)(2), which doesn't have W.

Emily0929, many years ago Taylor Forge published Bulletin #45 presenting a method for flange design using full-face gaskets. thread794-312282: Full face gaskets. Most software implements this bulletin, I believe.

However it is not needed for design of the flat head only. See UG-34 Eqn (1) and sketch (p).

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

TGS4 and SnTMan,

Yes, it is sketch p. I had been using sketch j, that is why things didn't make sense. Thank you for your help ! :)

I not recommend full face gasket.

I do, under certain circumstances :)
