Remelt on Welding Bead

Remelt on Welding Bead

(OP)
Dear Experts,

With regard to remelt of welding bead (root) using GTAW process, is this acceptable in ASME codes? Please provide me a technical explanation.

Thank you!

RE: Remelt on Welding Bead

There is nothing to prohibit it because you have a root already deposited.

RE: Remelt on Welding Bead

pipoy04,
If you have a deposited root and then you remelt prior to filling the joint - no problem as noted by metengr.
However, if by root bead "remelt" you mean getting inside the pipe and "blending" LOF or other defects by remelting the root you will require a repair procedure for most exotic materials as you are adding an additional heat cycle to the weld.
Cheers,
DD
