Suitable Welding For Cut Out Plate Moment Connection ???

Suitable Welding For Cut Out Plate Moment Connection ???

please suggest what kind of welding is suitable for below showing through plate exterior diaphragm plate moment connection (cut out plate)??? my column is continues and welding will be shop welding.

RE: Suitable Welding For Cut Out Plate Moment Connection ???

I'd like to hear how the angles that apparently are located between the webs and the big tube column are attached to the tube with bolts located in line with the beam webs center line. Also how does one hold the bolt or nut, on the inside of the column?

RE: Suitable Welding For Cut Out Plate Moment Connection ???

We have bolted into that before, we decided that the fab shop would cut out holes, weld a zinc plated pipe inside the column to the sides... then bolt all the way through with nuts on both sides.

It would likely be more economical to design a full moment splice for the column through the beams. But I assume you've gone down that route already.

NASCC did a presentation on connections to avoid with HSS. This one was a good example of what to avoid if at all possible. Try and get your hands on the "What your fabricator wishes you knew about HSS" presentation slides. I'm not sure if the presentation slides are up yet though.

Can you please send the link of presenation which you are talking about above, i tried but could not found.

I have discussed with fabricator he is easy with this cut out palte connection (even he can manage without any splicing in through plate/flange plate ).

I got this idea from the book of paker and enderson (HSS structural  connection  and tresses?) And to design this connection i used SCIA softwear but i am only confused about welding type either i should use fillet weld or penetrated welding.

RE: Suitable Welding For Cut Out Plate Moment Connection ???

If fillet welding workt, it ough to be cheapest.

This may be the presentation that Jayrod mentioned: Link

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Koot, that sure is the one I was after. They've promised to post just the slides on the NASCC website but I haven't found them yet. I don't know if the entire hour is worth the watch, but there were snippets that were good.
