Rotated concrete column

Rotated concrete column

Rotated concrete column

(OP)
Hello
So i am building my house and one of the RC columns ended being rotated around its axis . Yes i am a civil engineer but not quiet sure if this defect can have any significant impact of the structural performance of the house , so please help me ?

RE: Rotated concrete column

Maybe, maybe not. You would have to give us a lot more information. Some sketches or plans, perhaps?

RE: Rotated concrete column

Is it square or rectangular?

RE: Rotated concrete column

(OP)
its a square column , i need to scan the plans which are basically in French

RE: Rotated concrete column

its the one inside the red circle , its a square column with dimensions 0.35²x 3 m

RE: Rotated concrete column

How do you know it was rotated if it's square?

Depending on the particulars of the reinforcing in the column and how it was tied to beams at top and bottom it may or may not be an issue.

the column was recently constructed , i noticed the steel reinforcement cage was rotated it self i will provide a picture of its tomorrow

RE: Rotated concrete column

So you have a 350 x 350 square column, 3000 high. Correct? And the problem is that the reinforcement is twisted so that you have reduced cover at the corners of the reinforcing cage. Correct? How much cover was specified and how much do you have?

RE: Rotated concrete column

Hokie, I understand it as the reinforcing was rotated a full 90 degrees. Which may or may not be an issue depending on whether it's part of a lateral frame or not.

RE: Rotated concrete column

Your angle of rotation will likely have little effect on the structural capacity of the column; however, it does create a constructability issue with framing and trim. Make sure they correct that for the final finish by shimming or other means to box the columns in the same manner.

thanks to all of you, yes i aware that it has no impact on the structural stability yet it all boils down to the final finish and just wanted to know if we can rescue it in the end

RE: Rotated concrete column

The finish carpenters are pretty good at hiding mistakes. If you make them aware of the issue they should be able to come up with some form of repair. What are the plans for finishing the columns?

RE: Rotated concrete column

No structural implications. It looks like your joinery will at least partially conceal two sides, and maybe you can get a plasterer to true up the other sides. Or just keep it that way as a conversation piece.
