Basement excavations in Alberta

Basement excavations in Alberta

Basement excavations in Alberta

(OP)
Hi guys.

I'm looking at a residential walkway (pavers) that was presumably damaged when the adjoining property was redeveloped for a larger residence and basement. From the photographs it appears that the contractor made a near vertical cut at the property line in order to construct the basement foundation wall.

I've been working in Alberta (Edmonton) for a few years now and in the past I have been a bit surprised to see this type of excavation performed in the winter when the ground was frozen. This is the first time I have seen it done in the summer and I'm wondering if this is a common practice.

TIA

RE: Basement excavations in Alberta

I've been practicing in AB since 2007 and haven't encountered that. That said, I do mostly commercial. My wife does a lot of residential structural and seem to have a shocking cowboy contractor story to tell me most every weekend.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

RE: Basement excavations in Alberta

Vertical cuts will sometimes stand up for short periods of time in typical Edmonton clay, but it is not common practice to rely on that fact, particularly on a property line. The contractor is taking a chance and must bear the responsibility for damages suffered by the neighbor as a result of settlement.

WCB has rules related to excavations. Those will govern without a geotech.
