I'm seeing the word "mentee" as the counterpart of "mentor" bandied about more and more. Personally, I would not wish to be mentored by someone who does not know the meaning of the word "protege".

Or perhaps this s what is meant?

Protege implies a certain level of interest on the part of the mentor that may not be present with a mentee.
