In designing a purlin, though I analyze it with live load and dead load combined only or do I need to combine DL, LL and WL where WL is acting downward. Many thaks for your kind answers.

RE: In designing a purlin, though I ana

You analyze based on what your governing code requires as a minimum and what your engineering judgment dictates beyond that

Thanks Ron. I think DL should always be considered and combined with LL or Wind Load. Hope this assumption is acceptable. I am only designing a carport. (Don't have access to the code at the moment.)

RE: In designing a purlin, though I ana

jamescope - you design for the applicable combinations of loads (all of them) per the governing code. If you don't have the code, you need to find someone who does - or someone who knows what to do. For a carport, the wind uplift is sometimes much more of a concern than the downward component of wind.
