Starch silos fire protection

Starch silos fire protection

Starch silos fire protection

(OP)
Hi,
I have a simple question.
I have to protect a starch tank, which NFPA should I follow?
I have already read the NFPA 61 "Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Products Facilities", but It seems to do not include storage tank fire protection. I have also read the NFPA 230 "Standard for the Fire Protection of Storage", but it does not concern the tank with agricultural dust.
Could you please indicate the NFPA that I have to follow?

RE: Starch silos fire protection

I am not sure for the reason to protect the silo containing starch powder since as a mass it would not contribute much to a fire; on the other hand powder residue in ducts and around machinery could be a problem, so proper mechanical and electrical maintenance and house cleaning would be of paramount importance. Anyway, explosion from combustible dust would destroy sprinkler piping. I would say check NFPA 70 for electrical safety under combustible dust to insure that the building has the proper wiring and electrical motors meet the requirements.

I think you're entering into the combustible dust arena and sprinkler protection may not solve your problem but it will make your client feel warm and fuzzy. Your questions indicate that professional assistance beyond an internet forum is warranted.

RE: Starch silos fire protection

Professional advice on fire protection could be sought out from you fire insurance carrier since several of the insurance companies in the US have their own fire protection specialists.

The AHJ asked to the client to cool the silos with a deluge system, that's because I asked.
