Fire figthing at Biogas plant

For a firefighting systema at a Biogas plant, do you have to include sprinklers at the reactor tanks? I believe not because once a fire starts and explosion would be inminent. And what you should do is design a ring with hydrants and water lines right?

Acording to NFPA 820 if this applies in table 6.2.2(a), for anaerobic digesters the systems should be H+FE (hydrants plus portable fire extinguishers)

RE: Fire figthing at Biogas plant

I remember some past issues of the magazine "Power" dealing with biogas power plants. Do a search meanwhile, I'll double check my library for these past articles going back to the 80's. I am confidant that there were updated articles.

RE: Fire figthing at Biogas plant

Check NFPA 850 (2015) Ch. 9.5

Great help ZDR thanks. Article 9.5.5 states for for equipment with concentration of explosive gases to use NFPA 68, 69 and 664 for venting or explosion suppression

RE: Fire figthing at Biogas plant

An explosion is not (necessarily) imminent, part of the point is to reduce the risk of a fire escalating to an explosion.

Assuming this is process plant scale, fire protection should be part of the overall safety case not just (or in addition to) any prescriptive code requirements. For example:
  • Process vessel pressure relief for liquid containing vessels considers impinging pool or jet fires and may require fire-proof insulation or not.
  • Bunds might be graded for flamm. liquids.
  • Fixed fire monitors or deluge systems may be needed to cool adjacent pressure vessels.
  • Fires might be extinguished by isolating the source of leak, allowing the leak to burn off rather than accumulating unburnt gas and then deflagrating/detonating.

Thanks mb22, but the original question is if for this plants do you use sprinklers for the tanks, of course that explosion preventions suggestions are welcome too but is not my area for this project
