High Alloy Steel grade

(OP)
Greetings to Respected and Experienced Members...

Please let me know this.
410 has less desirable properties than 316 but it is placed in High Alloy Grade category. What is the reason for this and what extra benefit they have because of this category.

Thanks in advance
Regards......

RE: High Alloy Steel grade

Because of the chromium content. The higher chromium is desirable in sulfidation environments and the chromium increases hardenabilty.

Have you access to any basic book on Materials Science like Van Vlack, hope this is not an assignment question.

RE: High Alloy Steel grade

410 may have lower pitting resistance in aqueous chloride environments, but it is immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking.
There are also many high temp environments where the Mo in 316 is a detriment.
The alloys are very different, there is almost no application where these would both be options.
