Steel Canopy Design

Steel Canopy Design

(OP)
I am designing a steel canopy with 4 steel columns. I am having trouble determining the correct seismic coefficient for this application. Any suggestions?

RE: Steel Canopy Design

Cantilever columns or R=3.

Thanks for the information

RE: Steel Canopy Design

I like to run the beams over the columns to get some frame action. It's a little tougher with only 4 columns so you'll likely have to use cantilever columns.

RE: Steel Canopy Design

The seismic coefficients depend on the lateral system used. Assuming you are using ASCE 7, it could be a cantilevered columns (special or ordinary); it might be a ordinary moment frame (intermediate and special are possible but probably not practical with 4 columns); if it is SDC C or B, it might be a steel system not specifically detailed for seismic (R=3); and, I have seen canopies designed as non building structures with a system selected in chapter 15.

Describe your lateral system (or framing plan) and tell us the seismic design category. Then someone might be able to provide a helpful response.
