Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

(OP)
Hello everyone,

I am facing some confusion as to what are the accepted types of head in ASME Sec VIII Div 1.

I am suppose to design a vessel with a flat bolted flange for the head(as in the attached image). I was under the impression that there are only 4 types of head accepted under ASME, that is Hemi, Ellipsoidal, Conical and Torris heads.
I know that we can also use dished covers with bolted heads as per appendix 1.

My client is insisting that the flat bolted head (with no flange) is accepted under ASME and I dont agree with this.
I hope someone can help me out with this issue as I have no senior to refer back to.
I know that by right, pressure vessels are supposed to be designed by a professional with a full understanding of the code but at the moment I am in a tight spot for an answer.

I thank you all in advance.

RE: Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

corina90, if you had a copy of the Code, you could design these per UG-34.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

RE: Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

corina90:

A flat cover welded to a Shell (no bolts) is accepted by ASME VIII-1 code. As SnTMan wrotte, take a look into UG-34 and Fig. UG-34, then look at Fig. UW-13.2 for specifics on how to weld a flat plate to a shell.

SnTMan and Jano6924,

Thank you so much for the reply. Greatly appreciated.

So meaning, according to UG 34, we can weld the flat cover onto the vessel. But we can we use appendix 2 flange with bolted covers? Are bolted covers accepted as part of the code?

Regards.

RE: Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

Yes, of course bolted covers are accepted. But you won't be able to design it, with a so limited knowledge of the code. To simplify your task, you could use a standard flange plus blind, but still you'll need a copy of the code and study it in depth.

RE: Flat bolted head for pressure vessel

If you intend to use standard flange plus blind, both shall be per ASME B16.5 if the Shell diameter is no larger tan 24 inch., if Shell diameter is larger tan 24 inch. the flange and blind shall be per ASME B16.47, see UG-34(c)(1).

Depending on design conditions and size of vessel, sometimes is cheaper (or not) to design the flange per Appendix 2 and the blind per UG-34. For the blind you shall use Fig. UG-34 sketches (j) or (k) plus UG-34(c)(2).

In any case I recommend you to get support by an experienced engineer, he/she can provide you with the most correct way to go.

Regards.

Hai all,

Thanks so much for all the information. Greatly appreciated. Will try to send the design to a senior reviewer.

Thanks again.
