Wire Rope Inspection

Wire Rope Inspection

Wire Rope Inspection

(OP)
We have a custom built large crane that has been in service for roughly 15 years in a marine environment. We are in the process of replacing the hoisting wire rope, but due to access constraints will not be replacing our pendant lines.

We have x-rayed the pendant lines and have not found any anomalies. To my understanding, x-rays only check the outer wires for material loss, and whether any strands are out of place.

Is there any form of NDE that can check the core? If money was no object, what NDE should be performed? Pull-tests are not possible because we cannot remove the wire rope.

RE: Wire Rope Inspection

I have been out of the WR business for years, but I believe that your x-ray should have been able to give you good information about some of the internals. I have heard of some acoustic emission methods that may be suitable for WR testing.

RE: Wire Rope Inspection

Have you checked any applicable crane standards, from ASME, to determine replacement and inspection schedules? I would not rely on RT for internal wire rope condition.

RE: Wire Rope Inspection

Your best (technical ;) friend here is the magneto-inductive rope testing technology. There's applications in the market which can be drawn along the rope and will check the rope internally against their calibration value with very good reliability. To be on the safe side, best would be to hire a reputed rope assessment company.

RE: Wire Rope Inspection

I checked Norsok standards for lifting equipments. They recommend the Pull Test for safety qualification.
