hi, i am writing a code in fortran for static analysis of portal frames. the intention is to put some point loads on the structure and analyse it to get the reactions/displacements. could some one explain how to consider the self weight of structure in the analysis.

Self-weight for beams would simply be calculated as a uniformly distributed load derived from the weight of the section.

If you're using a stiffness matrix algorithm, you'll likely deal with the self weight at statically equivalent nodal forces at the ends of the members.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
