Spray-on Fireproofing - Construction Sequencing

Spray-on Fireproofing - Construction Sequencing

Spray-on Fireproofing - Construction Sequencing

(OP)
I have a 2-story building in the U.S. with composite-steel framing and cambered steel beams on the 2nd floor. Spray-on fireproofing is required for beams and columns but not the deck. The contractor asked if they could do the fireproofing before placement of the 2nd floor concrete. I advised against this, thinking that the beam deflection under the wet weight of the concrete would cause much of it to fall off and have to be re-applied. The contractor agreed and then requested to do the spray-on fireproofing one day after the concrete placement of the floor slab. While this is unusual from what we typically see for construction sequencing, I can't think of anything inherently wrong with this schedule.

Please let me know if you know of any practical limitations, code requirements, manufacturer's guidance, etc. that would prohibit or discourage S.O.F.P. of the primary steel one day after placement of the concrete deck it is supporting.

RE: Spray-on Fireproofing - Construction Sequencing

If that is all the dead load of significance, then it should be OK. Make sure the fireproofing adhesion gets checked after placement. Check the thickness as well.

RE: Spray-on Fireproofing - Construction Sequencing

My gut reaction is to say that you could probably apply the fire proofing most anytime and be fine. To be sure, I'd see if you can get your paws on this: Link.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
