Safety distance for ammonia storage installation

Safety distance for ammonia storage installation

Hi,

I want to know what is the safety distance that needs to be maintained between ammonia compressor and the electrical substation.

RE: Safety distance for ammonia storage installation

Check NFPA 55 or Compressed Gas Association G-2.1. Unfortunately, I don't believe either has a specific requirement that prescribes a separation distance from a NH3 compressor or stationary container and an electrical substation.

Thanks. That helps.

Although there may not be any prescribed distances, I would still use some safe engineering judgment. While anhydrous ammonia is not considered a flammable liquid, under the right oxidizing condition, it will combust; it also has a high affinity for water which can be dangerous. You may want to check Mass. CMR on Refrigeration/AC as it may have additional info as this State has a two year mandatory inspection on related equipment over 20 tons. For lack of guidance, you could adopt NFPA 70 discussing safe distances from flammable and combustible liquid storage.
