What are uses of Sodium Hypochlorite?

What are uses of Sodium Hypochlorite?

(OP)
Hello Chemical Engineers,

I need to know the uses of sodium hypochlorite other than disinfection.

We have sea water electro-chlorination plant and we produce surplus quantities of sodium hypochlorite of 2% concentration and we would like to know if we can sell it to other businesses.

If the concentration required by other industries is much higher; can we increase the concentration by sending the solution through multiple stages of electrolysis cells?

Actually we have multiple electrolysis cells designed for producing 2% concentration and I think we can make them produce more concentrated solution (15%) if the feed is already having concentration more than 2%.

thank you in advance for answers

Regards

RE: What are uses of Sodium Hypochlorite?

Bleaching is another use of sodium hypochlorite.

It is used as a reactant in making chlorine dioxide.

Vagurly recall there is a limit on hypo concentration possible in an electrochlorination unit due to insoluble magnesium bicarbonate (??) precipitation in the H2 degasser vessel d/s the electrolysis cell - it may be 15% by wt - check with the unit vendor. We had problems with these Mg salt precipatation in some of these units in the South China Sea.

I dont think there is much use for 2% hypochlorite apart from disinfectant. In higher concentrations (apart from being toxic) its a good oxidiser that has uses in organic chemistry (not my area of expetice) but a quick google search using the words "hypochlorite reagent use" came up withsome examples. 2% 8assuming weight) would be around .27M - a little on the low side i think.

RE: What are uses of Sodium Hypochlorite?

2% isn't worth shipping anywhere- too much worthless water which is heavy and costly to ship.
