Bleed Ring

Bleed Ring

Bleed Ring

(OP)
Hello Folks,

We bought a few drip rings, 3", 600#, with 1/2" tap. They all came in 1.5" thickness. They all also have a socket shape inside them, please see attached sketch.

Our Client is insisting to weld a Sockolet on the tap (3" x 1/2") and proceed with welding the nipple and valve.

The SOL can't fit into the drip rings between the two flanges.

Please kindly take a look at the attached sketch.

IMHO, the SOL is redundant and we should just insert an 1/2" pipe and weld around and proceed.

Any comments/advise/idea is highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

RE: Bleed Ring

What's shown in the partial sketch looks like a definite no-no and I'm sure someone here will explain why.

RE: Bleed Ring

Frank,
What is the diameter of the socket in the Bleed Ring?

Sometimes its possible to do all the right things and still get bad results

Dear pennpiper,
the socket is 20 mm diameter with 10 mm depth and then it reduces to 13 mm, in order for a 0.5" pipe to be inserted.
The drip ring has come as 1.5" width and 5.75" diameter. It can't be welded to a SOL as space is not enough.
Thanks.

RE: Bleed Ring

Frank,
I suggest you try the following:
1. Forget the SOL
2. Get a 1/2"NPS Schedule 80 Nipple (6" long) and see if it will fit in the socket
3. May require a little shaving.
3. If it fits then perform a standard fillet weld for a 1/2 inch Socket Weld

Sometimes its possible to do all the right things and still get bad results

RE: Bleed Ring

Frank1344 - You're correct. The SOL makes no sense. Suggest:
1. Scrap the SOL
2. Get a 1/2" SCH 80 PE x PE nipple (2" long)
3. Socket weld the nipple to the bleed ring port
4. Socket weld a 1/2" SW x SW ball valve to the nipple
(Don't forget your gap rings for socket welds)
