SE import/export Microstation

SE import/export Microstation

Our company is currently working in 2D with Microstation, but has been considering moving to 3D.

Solid Edge advertises the ability to import and export 2D Microstation drawings.  Has anyone had experience using this feature?  Some of our customers still require 2D drawing copies in Microstation format.  Has anyone had experience using imported 2D Microstation drawings as a basis for starting the 3D Solid Edge model?

My concern is that we have a big investment in Microstation drawings; and also that when we switched to Microstation a number of years ago, the promised translator never really worked.

I would be interested in hearing both positive and negative comments.

Thanks in advance.

RE: SE import/export Microstation

Tom,
I have legacy 2D files in both EMS and Microstation formats that I convert to SE for ECP work; however, we seldom create models from the .dgn files.  I can tell you that the conversion to .dft is usually very good with minimal data loss.  When we chose to go with Solid Edge the decision was influenced by the conversion capabilities .  Haven't had much experience with other 3D apps but since MicroStation and SE were both Intergraph products at one time I expect SE's .dgn conversion is one of the better ones going.
