POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

(OP)
Dear All, Good evening!
Regarding the subject matter due to malfunctioning of MOV limit switch Gearbox of B'Fly. valve broken.
Now after repairing of G.Box how we can position valve flapper in Open Position.
Valve can't drop as it is on main header of Sea water cooling, required Turnaround if want to drop which is not possible now.
Pl. Advice.

With regards

RE: POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

Hello GAL02,

Please try to explain with more details. Either your problem is not possible to solve without full draining of the pipeline, and turning or complete demounting of the valve, or I have not understood the problem. It seems that all will depend on valve, limit switches and gearbox construction, and how the valve is mounted in the pipeline.

RE: POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

If you've removed the gearbox then what is left to observe?
Are there any markings?
What does the vendor manual say?
What does the vendor say?
Is there a photo?

I can only guess that you can maybe manipulate the stem into the open position by use of manual adjustment of the shaft ( I would guess you'll need no flow), but without a diagram of the valve how is anyone supposed to provide even generic advice.

Give us the tools and we can do the job. No tools (data), no job.

Seawater intake I guess is a pretty big valve, but please advise make, model, size etc

Dear All, Good evening!
Sorry for delay in response but I was out of office.
Actually this B'fly valve (32" X 150 #) is Actuator operated & installed on Sea Water Cooling service pump discharge line of the plant which is directly connected to 48" main header (& Suction 72")supplying cooling water to equipment's in the plant downstream.
This discharge line can't be isolate, Some electrical maintenance job was going on this B'fly valve and when they took this valve in line valve flapper was rotated 360° as a result of which Gearbox internal hit the stopper inside the Gearbox casing/ housing and broken down the housing in two halve.
As flapper rotate in 360° turn it's position is not sure in what position?, if we drop the gearbox the flapper shaft will be free to move & then bringing it to it's original position is not seeming easy.
question ;
1) How we will know the flapper is in which position (Open / Closed?)
2) How to bring flapper either in closed or open position?

With regards

RE: POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

1. If you do not have any way of finding the position of the relative position of the spindle to the pipeline, and at the same time be sure of the flap mounting relative to the spindle by outside observation, you will either have to check by turning and observe the flow, or dismount. I doubt that any x-ray, magnetic, metallic detector or temperature gradient photo will do the trick.

2. Mechanical devise strong enough to hold and turn.

RE: POSITIONING OF Butterfly Valve FLAPER (OPEN POSITION) (MOV operated)

Do you have the manufacturers drawings or diagrams of the valve?

How did they set up the actuator in the first place?

Usually there is some sort of surface indication of valve position, but you might need to take the actuator off to see them....

Thanks to all of you for your feedback, but due to SSD I couldn't monitor what Electrical guys done there.
Moreover time being Operation is also not keen to look after it, we may start again by end of SSD.

Thanks to all of you again!
I will be back again with more details.
