PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

(OP)

Hi all,

I am Italian and I am a master Building engineer. Since in Italy there is not a specific fire engineering university I started my work experience in a fire engineering office as senior draftsman in the project of a big Mosque’s sprinkler plants. Subsequently I had the opportunity to design from the scratch several water-foam plants in the tank farms placed in Egypt and in Switzerland. I am actually an Italian Fire Investigation association member, and I have already conducted a fire investigation on fire that occurred on a wooden roof in Bologna. In addition I worked on Fire Safety Engineering case study, where I learnt FDS and smokeview using the visual platform of Pyrosim.

Now I feel that is time to move on and I would like to move in a country where the fire engineering culture is widely developed. So I decided to send some application in London.

Since I have not a fire engineer education do you think that I have to attach a portfolio to sign my fire engineering experience?

Thanks

RE: PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

What's the harm? You can't really emphasize your educational qualifications.

RE: PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

You have experience with one project and one simulation, no education in fire protection or investigation and you want to call yourself a "fire engineer"? You need more experience and education in the subject. Good luck.

@Ron I have never called myself "fire engineer". But let me say that my experience is not limited to one project. I have designed from the scratch (that mean that I conducted supports design, p&id, plant layout and hydraulic calculations) almost 50 dedicated plants (that includes these plants typology: Deluge, Foam-water, FM-200 and CO2) in Egypt. Furthermore I have designed from the scratch the fire fighting protection (that mean sprinkler systems, foam-water, CO2 and FM-200) of two one hectare very important factory in Switzerland. I made three FDS case study simulation and I followed several short courses on the subject.
It is not simple to further deepen the fire engineering in Italy since there are not valuable master on the subject. As far as I know also Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc. does not have a dedicated master or bachelor for this subject.
Furthermore my intent was to apply for graduate or intern position, since I am still 26 years old.

RE: PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

Yes you should. Whether you call it portfolio, a resume or a curriculum vitae is up to you.

I have already done a resume, but I was wondering if a portfolio, where I explain in detail every project, might be better.

RE: PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

A website would be better than a portfolio. That way you can post pictures and write about them instead of hauling around a portfolio.

RE: PORTFOLIO OR maybe NOT

An engineering degree in fire protection from a university sanctioned by the NCESS in the United States would be worth more than your portfolio. The University of Edinburgh in Scotland, Ghent (Belgium), or Lund (Sweden) offer you the correct path for practicing fire protection engineering. Frankly, you're so far out of your element that you scare me.

Mmm...You are right..But the most of engineers that works in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and France haven't these degrees.
