Tack-welding on A706 rebar

Tack-welding on A706 rebar

Tack-welding on A706 rebar

(OP)
Hi!

Can I use tack welding on A706 rebar, not A615?
Which code/spec refers to this problem?

Thanks!

RE: Tack-welding on A706 rebar

It would generally need to be per AWS D1.4.

Where I've run into this was contractors wanting to tack-weld the rebar instead of tying it, but the ones wanting to do that also didn't have weld procedures qualified, etc.

RE: Tack-welding on A706 rebar

What are you welding to it? AWS D1.4 covers reinforcement to reinforcement or reinforcement to structural steel welding. You have to watch your carbon content or it won't be compatible. The limit is covered within the spec.

RE: Tack-welding on A706 rebar

There has historically been an issue with tack welding small bars crossing big bars, causing a stress riser in the larger bar.

Thanks for responses!

So, is tack-welding not allowed for both A615 and A706?
That's my question.

Thanks again!

RE: Tack-welding on A706 rebar

If you read AWS D1.4, you'll see that you can weld A706, but as JStephen mentioned you have to make sure it's per AWS D1.4 and that the contractor has qualified weld procedures. I would also pay very close attention to what hokie66 mentioned.

I guess there is confusion between structural welding and tack welding.

Can I use tack welding on A706 rebar,

I vote no. The issue with tack welding is the embrittlement that results from rapidly heating a small portion of the rebar cross section and then allowing it to rapidly cool. While this might apply less to A706 owing to it's improved ductility, I think that it still applies.

The localized embrittlement business could be resolved by applying appropriate D1.4 preheat but it's hard to imagine anyone going to the trouble of preheating and inspecting just so that they can tack weld.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
