Possible singularitiy

(OP)
Hi

I'am working on a project where i'am analyzing a crane foundation, i'am new at reading results and hope to get som input on the results that i have.

To analyze the foundation i have used Ansys Workbench 16.2, most of the parts are made with plane elements where the thickness is set in ansys, but the senter pipe and top flange are made with solid bodys. Between the plane elements it's used mesh connection and between the plane elements and the bodys it's used bonded contact.
On the top flange its used a moment force to simulate the force given by a crane at max lifting capacity.
From the company that have given the task it's said that the max von mises stress allowed, is 96 MPa due to material and welding methods.
Now to my problem

From the picture above we see that the stress inn the top is way over 96 MPa, between the top flange and the top edge of the side supports. My question is then, if it's possible to neglect these results due to the formation of singularity in this part of the structure? if this is true is there a good way of documenting this?

If anybody can give me a comment on this i would be great full
and if anybody know about any litteratur about interpretering these type of results, it would be a great help for future projects.

RE: Possible singularitiy

Hello, nice to meet you.
I'm new here on the forum, but experienced with Ansys and FEA.
Looking into your post, I can say easily what the problem is. It's about precision.
Notedly you can't keep this result if the material is limited to 96MPa, so, you'll need refine your design or your mesh and improve your contacts to avoid the concentration of tension on the gap, otherwise you'll be in the yield strength of the material and not the elastic limit of the material.
But, what happen if you keep it is the possibility of a permanent deformation on the area with a conformation of the edges to allow a better distribution of tension.
Also, if you just want reduce the maximum on the graphic, simple right click on the color legend and change it.
