shear connection vs moment connection

shear connection vs moment connection

shear connection vs moment connection

(OP)
Friends,
i had to design 6 storey shopping mall in siesmic zone 5 for static analysis only.
c/c spacing btwn columns is 8 mtrs
Now can i design a shear connection by providing vertical cross breacings ?
(or)
shall i go for moment connection ?

among both which is economical and which is better to design?

RE: shear connection vs moment connection

Your question is too general, and you omit too many controlling factors, to be able to provide a reasonable answer. If you are looking at static loads only, why do mention that the structure is in a seismic zone 5? The relative construction costs (fabrication and erection) for cross-braced frames versus moment frames can depend on some of the following (not an exhaustive list) -

1) The skills and particular equipment of the fabricator.
2) The skills and availability of the field erection crews.
3) How much field welding is required versus shop welding.
4) The number of actual connections to make in the shop and field.
5) How tall the structure is.
6) The relative costs of labor versus materials in your area.
7) The availability of various materials in your area.

And this list doesn't even address any factors that would be important if you were to consider dynamic seismic loads.

OP, you may also look at proper seismic detailing. AISC seismic manual would be a good book to check. Your question seems like this is the first time you are designing a building. Since this is a shopping mall that will be full of people, for their safety, you should really do your homework or seek advice from an experienced engineer.

Thanks for suggestions.
