Gas Nitriding Inconel 625?

Gas Nitriding Inconel 625?

Gas Nitriding Inconel 625?

(OP)
Have a customer that says they've done this before. I've never heard of nitriding 625. Maybe it works, seems like not enough iron content though.

Anyone done it?

RE: Gas Nitriding Inconel 625?

Are they talking about ion implantation or actually forming nitrides?
Shoving N into the structure to provide surface strength is readily doable.
It will be a low temp and very shallow, but it will raise surface hardness.
This is done in SS with both N and C.

Nitriding at higher temp can be done also. What about Nb and Cr nitrides?
It will be shallow (Ni greatly limits diffusion), and if there are any Cr nitrides formed the corrosion resistance will drop significantly.

Do they have some reason for doing this? Something that cannot be achieved with cold work?

They want surface hardness for abrasion resistance. Part is too complex for cold work.

RE: Gas Nitriding Inconel 625?

What is the max service temp?
Is there any corrosion issue?

Why not HVOF with WC?
