Modeling backlash into a motion simulation

(OP)
Hi,

Say i want to model backlash into a rack and pinion or gears motion simulation, does anyone has some tips what is the best option in how to do this?

I used a simplified model (see figure below ) to test the possibilities, using a 3D contact between the 2 coupling links. The results using this method are not as expected. If i apply a torque to the first coupling, the transmitted torque to the second coupling is dependent on the stiffness of the 3D - Contact. For example if the applied torque is 3 Nm, than with the 3D contact the transmitted torque to the second link is 2Nm. When i lower the stiffness of the 3D contact, the transmitted torque lowers as well. I was expecting that after the 2 links made contact, the transmitted torque would be the same as the applied value (like i would expect with backlash in reality).
