Built up girder with offset web

Built up girder with offset web

Built up girder with offset web

(OP)
My company is working on a pedestrian bridge project that has a strong aesthetic influence. Due to this and other design requirements, the web of the built up girder will not be centered on the flanges. Also, the top flange will be wider than the bottom flange. Can someone give any guidance as to any additional requirements to account for outside of the standard built up girder specifications (stiffeners, tension field action, etc.)?

RE: Built up girder with offset web

Torsion due to the load not being applied through the shear centre would be one.

RE: Built up girder with offset web

If you go the tension field route, your stiffeners will be the compression struts of the "truss". Those struts would be eccentrically loaded which may warrant some consideration. Although I suppose that you could make the stiffeners concentric to the web rather than full width.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

UpNorthStruct:
You say..., “My company is working on a pedestrian bridge project that has a strong aesthetic influence.” And, are all the rest of your company’s structures ugly? smile Can’t really tell from the plans, elevations and details you’ve shown in your OP. But, you would likely get a more meaningful discussion started by showing these, since we can’t see what you are dealing with from here.
